"Singing to 'em." p.151

"The cowboys of a trail herd, who generally slept in pairs, were divided into night watches which might be of from two to four hours' duration according to the number of riders in the outfit. While on guard they were mounted on their quietest and best ponies, their 'night horses,' and as they made their monotonous rounds they sang and crooned the while. Some of their efforts were scarcely to be indexed as 'songs.' I don't think I've ever heard a real good singing voice on night watch. But I will say that the regular lyrics and the improvisations that floated through those night airs certainly belonged to our Western Americana. Most of the offerings were ballads, sentimental or sad, with a goodly sprinkle of smutty stuff, which, like all such things, contained plain, unadulterated rot along with others that were really amusing." p.149
